When to visit Ethiopia?
Ethiopia can be visited almost year-round, though the calendar deserves some nuance. The dry season, from October to March, remains the most comfortable window for exploring the historic circuit in the north — Lalibela, Gondar, Aksum, the monasteries of Lake Tana — and for venturing into the Danakil Depression, where heat remains extreme at any time. The rains of July and August, sometimes dreaded, nonetheless transform the Simien highlands into vast green expanses, ideal for trekking if you're willing to accept occasional showers. January is also the month of Timkat, one of the country's most beautiful Orthodox festivals. For the Omo valleys, the end of the dry season is preferred, when the tracks become passable again.
