Savanna & Rift WildlifeNature & Landscapes

The only lake in the Great Ethiopian Rift known to be free of schistosomiasis, Langano enchants with its golden-brown waters, abundant birdlife and lodges overlooking the volcano. Just 200 km from Addis Ababa, it combines easily with nearby lakes.

Lake Langano stretches across the Great Ethiopian Rift valley, approximately 200 km south of Addis Ababa. Its reddish-brown waters, colored by volcanic minerals, are renowned to be free of schistosomiasis — a rarity in the region that makes it the only lake in the Rift where swimming is risk-free. Surrounding it, a wooded savanna harbors diverse wildlife and several lodges overlooking the lake.

Quick practical guide

  • Swimming: permitted — schistosomiasis-free waters; check local conditions upon arrival.
  • Access: paved road from Addis Ababa (approximately 200 km), turnoff from the main highway toward Shashemene.
  • Recommended duration: 1 to 2 nights to enjoy the lake and surroundings.
  • Accommodation: several lodges and campsites on the shores, various price ranges.
  • Dress code: no particular restrictions; pack sunscreen and a hat.

What to see

The lake covers approximately 230 km². Its shores alternate between ochre sandy beaches, reed beds and riparian forests. The water color — ranging from brown to pink depending on the light — is characteristic and photogenic. Hippopotamuses frequent certain shallow zones. Birds are omnipresent: pelicans, herons, kingfishers and raptors line the shores throughout the day.

History and context

Langano is part of the chain of lakes in the Ethiopian Rift, formed by tectonic and volcanic activity that has shaped the valley over millions of years. Unlike neighboring lakes Abiata and Shala — classified as a national park — Langano has remained a relaxation and ecotourism site. It has attracted residents from Addis Ababa since the 1970s seeking weekend lakeside getaways.

Highlights of the visit

Swimming in Rift waters

Swimming in a Rift lake without health risks is a rare experience in Éthiopie. The slightly alkaline waters have a soft texture. Swimming is possible from the lodge beaches or public shores.

Birdwatching

The lake and its surroundings constitute a premier ornithological site. Early in the morning, the shores come alive with hundreds of aquatic birds. A local guide helps identify endemic Rift species.

Abiata-Shala national park nearby

Just a few kilometers away, lakes Abiata and Shala form a national park. Lake Shala, very deep and surrounded by hot springs, contrasts sharply with Langano. Flamingos frequent Abiata depending on the season.

Sunset over the lake

In late afternoon, raking light transforms the golden-brown surface of the lake. Lodge terraces offer an ideal setting to observe this moment without leaving your seat.

Photography tips

Morning and evening light is most flattering on the colored waters. From the shores, frame bird silhouettes against the light. For reflections, choose windless hours. A telephoto lens is useful for wildlife. No known photography restrictions on public shores.

Location and access

Langano is located in the Oromia region, Rift valley, approximately 200 km south of Addis Ababa via the main highway toward Shashemene. The track to the lodges branches off from the marked turnoff on the paved road. By rental car or minibus from the capital, allow approximately 3 hours of travel. The site is accessible by standard vehicle outside the rainy season; a 4×4 may be useful for some lodges during the wet season.

The dry season (October to May) is the most pleasant. The major rainy season (June-September) makes some tracks muddy and skies overcast. On weekends, the lake is busy with residents from Addis Ababa; on weekdays, the atmosphere is calmer.

The Rift highway makes it easy to connect Ziway, Langano, Abiata-Shala and Awasa in two to three days. Most travelers make this loop by rental car or with a driver-guide from Addis Ababa.

Birdwatching, shore hikes, boat excursions, visits to the neighboring Abiata-Shala park and kayaking outings offered by some lodges. Terrestrial wildlife (baboons, warthogs) is visible around the lake.

On weekdays outside the rainy season, it is generally not necessary. On weekends and Ethiopian holidays, lodges fill up quickly: advance reservation is recommended.
