Mount Entoto
Mount Entoto
At 3,100 m above Addis Ababa, Mount Entoto blends imperial history, 19th-century Orthodox churches and eucalyptus forest with panoramic views over Ethiopia's capital.
Mount Entoto dominates Addis Ababa from the north, at over 3,000 metres altitude. A former imperial capital of Ethiopia under Yohannes IV and then Menelik II, the hill shelters historic churches, a museum and dense eucalyptus forest. The panorama over the capital below and the historical weight of the site make it an essential stop for understanding the origins of Addis Ababa.
Practical Information at a Glance
- Access: by taxi, minibus or tuk-tuk from central Addis Ababa; the paved road climbs to the summit.
- Recommended duration: 2 to 3 hours to combine church, museum and panorama.
- Dress code: covered clothing required to enter the churches (shoulders and knees covered).
- Altitude: approximately 3,100 m — bring a warm layer, even in the dry season.
What to See
The eucalyptus forest, planted in the late 19th century, covers the slopes and creates a cool atmosphere unusual for an African capital. Women carrying heavy loads of wood on their backs walk along the trails — a daily scene that leaves an impression on visitors. Two Orthodox churches, Entoto Maryam and Entoto Raguel, punctuate the summit plateau.
History and Context
Menelik II chose Entoto as capital in the 1880s before descending to found Addis Ababa in 1886, drawn by the hot springs of the plain. The Entoto Maryam church, built around 1882, was the site of his coronation. The site remains a powerful symbol of the founding of the modern Ethiopian state and resistance to colonisation.
Highlights of the Visit
Entoto Maryam Church
A circular church in Ethiopian Orthodox style, it preserves murals and liturgical objects linked to Menelik II's reign. An adjoining museum displays imperial clothing, weapons and documents from the era.
Entoto Raguel Church
Set slightly apart, this older church is an active pilgrimage site. On Orthodox feast days, hundreds of the faithful dressed in white gather there — a sober and moving spectacle.
Panorama over Addis Ababa
On clear days, the view embraces the entire capital and its neighbourhoods stretching to the horizon. Early morning, before pollution haze rises, offers the best visibility.
Forest and Trails
Marked trails traverse the eucalyptus forest. The Entoto natural park, developed in recent years, offers picnic areas and jogging paths frequented by Addis Ababa residents on weekends.
Etiquette and Visiting Rules
- Remove your shoes before entering the churches.
- Shoulders and knees covered for men and women.
- Ask permission before photographing worshippers in prayer.
- Avoid visits during services unless you are there to pray — or stay back and remain silent.
Tips for Photography
Morning light (before 9 am) is ideal for the city panorama and for portraits in the forest. On Orthodox feast days (Timkat, Meskel), gatherings of the faithful in white offer striking photographic scenes — always with discretion and the consent of those present.
Location and Access
Entoto is located about ten kilometres north of central Addis Ababa. The main road climbs from the Shiro Meda district. Taxis and minibuses serve the site from several points in the city. Accessible vehicle access to the summit is possible, but forest trails remain unarranged.
In immediate proximity within the capital: National Museum of Ethiopia (city centre, where Lucy is displayed) and Holy Trinity Cathedral.
Nearby
- National Museum of Ethiopia — houses the skeleton of Australopithecus afarensis known as "Lucy", a masterpiece of world palaeontology.
- Holy Trinity Cathedral — baroque Orthodox cathedral in central Addis Ababa, burial place of Haile Selassie.
- Mercato — one of Africa's largest markets, west of the city centre, for crafts and spices.
