Debre Libanos Monastery
Debre Libanos Monastery
Situated 110 km from Addis Ababa, Debre Libanos has watched over the Blue Nile Gorge for eight centuries: a sacred monastery, geladas, and breathtaking panoramas.
The journey to Debre Libanos Monastery takes you through the dramatic Blue Nile Gorge, with its restless landscapes, successive plateaus, and descents toward rivers and streams. This monastery ranks among Éthiopie's most prestigious spiritual sites.
Founded in the 13th century by Saint Teklé Haymanot, the monastery was enhanced by a striking modern church built during the reign of Haile Selassie in 1961, adorned with beautiful stained-glass windows that dominate the lower grounds. It is at Debre Libanos that the Blue Nile Gorge truly begins.
This location is ideal for observing the monkeys that inhabit these mountains. Depending on terrain conditions during the rainy season, visitors may descend to the Portuguese Bridge—a structure whose origins spark debate among local historians. Some credit Portuguese builders in the 16th century, while others attribute it to a regional nobleman from the 17th century. Return to Addis Ababa at the end of the day.
