Getting Around Ethiopia's Cities by Bus

·

Traveling Ethiopia's roads is an essential part of any journey through the country. Savannah landscapes stretch for miles, dotted here and there by century-old baobabs, thorny acacias, and imposing mountain ranges that create remarkable geological diversity. This spectacle unfolds during every bus journey connecting Ethiopia's cities.

Immersion is complete when traveling by coach. It remains the most widespread form of transportation in the country. Comfortable and relatively affordable, buses allow you to reach every corner of the nation. The journey can sometimes be lengthy, however. Buses travel certain stretches at speeds of just 50 or even 30 km/h, some roads are in poor condition, and vehicles cannot operate between 6 p.m. and 5 a.m. Stops are therefore frequent, which isn't necessarily a drawback for admiring certain places in peace and quiet, but can also impose an uncomfortable rhythm on your journey.

Highly Affordable Fares

Bus prices are reasonably competitive. Expect 0.90 euros per 100 km with the state-run company and 1.80 euros for the pricier operators, which offer greater comfort. These services feature restrooms, reclining seats, and air conditioning. Tickets are purchased directly on the bus or at coach station counters. Several long-distance operators serve routes from Addis Ababa. Such as Tera Long, Yeshi Debele, and Askos. Below is a guide to reaching, from the capital, the country's ten other regions. We've included the map link for each route.
